Social media. These two words carry an ever changing and increasingly complicated meaning. There was a time when you had relatively few social media options. That time has passed. When setting up our own website, our WordPress theme gave us the option to set up 21 different social media accounts. Some of them, I’d never heard of.

Is it all worth your time?

There is a short answer to that question. No.

Time Spent on Social Media

The benefit of social media levels off after a certain amount of time spent using it. It’s most beneficial at the start.

That’s right, I said that it’s not all worth your time. The truth is, you can waste an incredible amount of time on social media when you could just be playing you lol game. You can like things Facebook, tweet, retweet, plus, digg, share, re-pin, blah, blah, blah. It helps to have the solid backing of reliable search engine optimization services to steer you in the right direction.

Now, with that being said, you should be using social media. There are some sites you can use to great effect with minimal time.

What should you be using?

If you are just starting out with social media, you should set up these two things:

  1. Facebook – Set up your page
  2. Twitter – Make an account

These two sites comprise the majority of the social media landscape. There are other pieces of social media that can be valuable (like a blog), but nothing is as easy or as quick as Facebook and Twitter. If you have limited time, these should be your go-to. Use these for 30 minutes a week and you’ll be doing great.

Our next post will tell you about Buffer, a service that makes managing social media easy.
